IEO NZ 2026 National Final Round Results Announced: New Zealand Students Take the Next Step Towards Greece

Updated: 2 days ago

Pinnacle Exam Centre is pleased to announce the results of the IEO NZ 2026 National Final Round Written Final.

The National Final Round was held on Saturday, 6 June 2026 at Massey University, Auckland, bringing together high-performing secondary students from across New Zealand for a rigorous written economics final and the IEO NZ Youth Forum on Economics.

This year’s NFR represented an important milestone for IEO NZ. Together with the earlier School Round, the National Final Round forms part of New Zealand’s selection pathway towards the Economics Olympiad International Final Round, which will take place in Greece this August.

The written assessment was a 2-hour, paper-based written final marked out of 100 marks. It was designed to assess students’ ability to apply economic concepts, use diagrams and calculations, explain economic mechanisms, evaluate trade-offs, and produce structured written arguments under exam conditions.

Beyond the written assessment, students also took part in the IEO NZ Youth Forum on Economics, where they applied economic reasoning to real-world New Zealand policy and business scenarios. The forum encouraged students to think through incentives, trade-offs, market failure, competition, resilience, and decision-making under constraints.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr Jeffrey Stangl, Associate Dean Executive Education / Director of Massey Executive Development at Massey Business School, for delivering a valuable and engaging lecture for our students. His contribution helped connect the competition experience with university-level economic thinking and real-world decision-making.

We also warmly thank Flynn Grace, Senior Tutor at Massey University, for facilitating the Youth Forum and helping create a thoughtful, interactive, and academically meaningful afternoon experience for the finalists.

We are grateful to all students, families, schools, teachers, volunteers, facilitators, and support staff who contributed to the success of this year’s National Final Round.

International Final Round Invitation Process

The International Final Round invitation process will begin from 13 June 2026.

Invitations will be issued by email according to the NFR written final ranking, starting from the highest-ranked students and proceeding down the ranking order.

Students and families are strongly encouraged to check both their email inbox and junk / spam folder carefully from 13 June onwards.

For students invited to proceed to the next stage of the International Final Round pathway, the invitation email will include:

  • the student’s award certificate;

  • an official invitation letter;

  • a school leave request letter;

  • the IFR Information Pack, including key information such as the expected timeline, estimated costs, and next-step requirements.

Please note that receiving an invitation is part of the New Zealand Team confirmation pathway. Final participation in the International Final Round will depend on the relevant confirmation steps, including student and parent / guardian consent, travel readiness, documentation, and other requirements communicated by PEC.

Once again, congratulations to all IEO NZ 2026 National Final Round participants. The written final represented a significant academic challenge, and every finalist should be proud of reaching this stage of the competition.

We look forward to supporting the next stage of the IEO NZ pathway and seeing New Zealand students continue to grow as thoughtful, capable, and globally minded young economists.
