Ready to Take On the UK’s Biggest Maths Challenge? Join UKSMC 2026

Registration for the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge, commonly known as UKSMC, closes on Thursday, 1 October 2026.
The competition will take place on Thursday, 8 October 2026, giving New Zealand secondary school students an opportunity to move beyond routine classroom mathematics and experience challenging problem solving in an international competition.
What Is UKSMC?
The UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge is designed for students in Year 13 and below. In New Zealand, it is recommended for students in Years 11–13.
UKSMC questions are very different from standard classroom exercises. Rather than simply applying a memorised formula, students are encouraged to recognise patterns, test ideas, eliminate possibilities and develop logical strategies.
The competition may include problems involving:
algebra;
geometry;
number theory;
combinatorics;
pattern recognition; and
logical reasoning.
Students do not need previous Olympiad experience to participate. A willingness to explore unfamiliar problems and think carefully is more important than knowing advanced formulas.
UKSMC 2026 Competition Details
Competition date: Thursday, 8 October 2026
Competition time: 5:00 pm–6:30 pm
Recommended year levels: New Zealand Years 11–13
Format: Remote, paper-based competition
Duration: 90 minutes
Calculator policy: Calculators are not permitted
Registration deadline: Thursday, 1 October 2026 at 11:00 pm New Zealand time
A New Question Format for 2026
The 2026 UKSMC paper will consist of 25 questions.
The first 22 questions will be multiple choice. The final 3 questions will require students to enter an exact numerical answer using a three-digit format from 000 to 999.
These final questions do not provide answer options. Students will need to complete the reasoning independently, calculate accurately and check that each answer has been entered in the correct format.
Students are not expected to complete every question. UKSMC is designed to challenge even strong mathematics students. Managing time, selecting questions carefully and knowing when to move on are all part of the competition.
Who Should Enter UKSMC?
UKSMC may be suitable for students who:
enjoy mathematical puzzles and challenging problems;
are confident with secondary school mathematics;
would like to explore mathematics beyond the classroom;
want to strengthen their problem-solving skills;
are interested in future competitions such as Senior Kangaroo or BMO; or
would like to experience an international mathematics competition.
The recommended year levels are Years 11–13, but mathematical readiness is more important than year level alone.
Why Participate?
UKSMC gives students an opportunity to approach mathematics differently.
Instead of asking only, “Which formula should I use?”, students are encouraged to ask, “How can I approach this problem?”
Through the competition, students can develop:
logical and analytical reasoning;
mathematical creativity;
pattern recognition;
strategic problem solving;
confidence with unfamiliar questions; and
persistence when an answer is not immediately obvious.
Participants may receive Gold, Silver or Bronze awards based on the score thresholds set for that year.
High-performing students may also become eligible for Senior Kangaroo or the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1, depending on UKMT’s current rules, score thresholds and eligibility requirements.
Final Registration Reminder
UKSMC 2026 will take place on Thursday, 8 October 2026 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
Registration closes on Thursday, 1 October 2026.
Families who would like their child to participate are encouraged to complete registration before the deadline.
