Academic Value / Why Participate
Find out whether you enjoy reasoning through unfamiliar problems. Practise identifying facts, organising conditions, checking conclusions and explaining your thinking. The result is a starting point for learning, rather than a pass/fail assessment.
Who It Suits
NZ Years 7–9, including students who enjoy patterns, puzzles, mathematics or computing. No previous formal logic study is needed. Older beginners are welcome to try Junior before moving to Senior.
Prerequisites and Readiness
Before you start
- Allow about 15–20 minutes in a quiet place. There is no enforced timer.
- Read any definitions carefully. Have paper and a pencil ready if helpful.
- Work independently, without AI, online search or a calculator.
- Use an email address you or your parent or guardian can check. Verify its spelling before submitting.
After you finish

Logic Challenge Overview

Free PINNACLE Junior Logic Challenge
Try the Free Junior Logic Challenge
NZ Years 7–9 · Beginner-friendly · 15–20 minutes · Free
Curious about puzzles, patterns or problem solving? Try 12 multiple-choice questions, one per page, and an optional explanation. Work at your own pace; there is no enforced timer.
Start the Free Junior Challenge
NZ Years 10–13? Explore the Senior Challenge. Older beginners can also try Junior first.
Which challenge should I choose?
Junior: NZ Years 7–9, or older beginners who want a gentler introduction through everyday rules, patterns and puzzles.
Senior: NZ Years 10–13, with introductory formal statements, arguments, deduction and proof. Definitions are provided; no previous formal logic course is required.
If you are unsure, start with Junior. Choosing Junior first is not a setback. These are learning activities, not placement exams.
A small taste of logical thinking
Example: Ana stands before Ben in a queue. Ben stands before Chen. Must Ana stand before Chen?
Reasoning: Yes. Combining the rules gives Ana → Ben → Chen. We do not need to know where anyone else stands. Follow the information given rather than guess.
This is an introductory example, not one of the scored challenge questions.
What is logic?
Logic is the study of how conclusions follow from information and rules. Students learn to separate facts from assumptions, organise conditions, draw conclusions, check for mistakes and explain why an answer follows. These habits are useful in mathematics, computing, science and everyday decision-making.
Why explore it in the age of AI?
Getting an answer is only one part of learning. Students also need to judge whether the answer is supported by the evidence, spot missing assumptions and test a claim. This free challenge offers a first experience of that kind of thinking.
What will you try?
The Junior questions introduce six skills: Understand, Organise, Reason, Deduce, Test and Justify. You will work with facts, sets, patterns, conditions and explanations to see whether this type of reasoning interests you.
Your result and what it means
Each correct multiple-choice answer earns 2 points: 12 questions, with a maximum score of 24. After submitting, review your result and check the email address entered in the form for a results email containing your score, the correct answer key and your submitted answers as a PDF. Please also check your spam or junk folder.
The score is a short learning snapshot, not a pass/fail decision or a prediction of competition performance. An optional written explanation is not included in the automatic score. A detailed skills profile or written-reasoning assessment would require teacher review and is not issued automatically.
Questions families often ask
Is it really free? Yes. No payment or course purchase is required to take the challenge.
Do I need to prepare? No previous formal logic course is required. Read each question carefully and try it independently. Use paper for your working if helpful; do not use AI, online search or a calculator.
Is this an official competition entry? This is a PINNACLE learning activity. It does not register or qualify a student for the International Logic Olympiad (ILO), and it carries no official competition award or certificate.
What if the email does not arrive? Check that the email address was entered correctly and check spam or junk. Contact info@pinnaclek12.com for help.
Do I have to join a course afterwards? No. Further practice, workshops, courses and official ILO participation are optional, separate choices. Course updates are optional.
