Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition
The Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition (CLMC) is an international mathematics competition organised by the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). The competition is designed to encourage students to explore mathematics beyond the classroom, strengthen their problem-solving skills, and develop greater confidence in mathematical thinking.
The CLMC is open to students from Grades K–12, with the competition particularly recommended for students in Grades 7–12. It is designed to be accessible to students with a wide range of mathematical abilities, making it an excellent opportunity for both students who are new to mathematics competitions and experienced competitors looking to further develop their skills.
Rather than focusing only on advanced mathematical knowledge, the CLMC encourages students to think creatively, recognise patterns, apply logical reasoning, and approach unfamiliar problems strategically. The competition aims to present mathematics as an engaging and enjoyable subject while giving students the opportunity to challenge themselves in an international competition environment.
Competition Format
The CLMC is a 90-minute individual competition consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions. Questions are designed to test mathematical understanding, logical reasoning and problem-solving ability rather than simply the memorisation of formulas.
The level of difficulty generally increases throughout the paper, allowing students to build confidence with earlier questions before progressing to more challenging problems.
Who Should Participate?
The CLMC is particularly suitable for students who:
enjoy mathematics and problem solving;
would like to experience an international mathematics competition;
want to strengthen their logical and analytical thinking skills;
are beginning their mathematics competition journey; or
are preparing for more advanced mathematical competitions.
For students interested in progressing further within the Canadian Mathematical Society competition pathway, the CLMC can also provide valuable preparation for the Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC), a higher-level competition held later in the year.

CLMC gives students an engaging opportunity to strengthen their mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and confidence through a wide range of accessible yet thought-provoking questions. It encourages students to think creatively, recognise patterns, and apply mathematical ideas in unfamiliar situations. The competition also provides valuable international competition experience and can serve as a useful stepping stone towards more advanced mathematics competitions such as the COMC.
CLMC is particularly suitable for students in Grades 7–12 who enjoy mathematics, logical thinking, and problem solving. It is well suited to students who are beginning their mathematics competition journey, as well as more experienced students who want to strengthen their skills in a supportive but challenging environment. Students who enjoy puzzles, patterns, and creative approaches to mathematical problems are especially encouraged to participate.
The best preparation for CLMC is to practise solving problems from previous CLMC papers and become comfortable working accurately under time pressure. Students should review key Grade 7–11 mathematics topics including algebra, geometry, probability, trigonometry, sequences and series, counting, polynomials, systems of equations and elementary number theory. CMS also provides additional problem-solving resources, including the CLMC Exam Archive, Crux Mathematicorum, and A Taste of Mathematics enrichment materials.
CLMC is an individual mathematics competition consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions completed in 90 minutes. All students receive the same set of questions, which are divided into three levels of increasing difficulty: five introductory questions worth 4 points each, five intermediate questions worth 5 points each, and five advanced questions worth 7 points each. The maximum possible score is 80 points, and unanswered questions receive 1 point to discourage random guessing. Calculators, mobile phones and other electronic devices are not permitted.
CLMC recognises high-performing students through a range of awards within geographical and grade-based divisions. Students outside Canada compete in the International Division, with separate categories for Grade 7 and under, Grades 8–12, as well as an overall International Champion category. Awards include Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honourable Mention based on the highest scores in each division. All official participants receive a certificate, with non-award recipients eligible for Top Quartile, Second Quartile, or Certificate of Participation recognition.
CLMC serves as an accessible entry point into the Canadian Mathematical Society’s competition pathway. Students who enjoy the CLMC can progress to the more challenging Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC), which places greater emphasis on written mathematical solutions and advanced problem solving. The wider CMS pathway is generally presented as CLMC → COMC → CMO → IMO, with the COMC acting as the main gateway towards Canada’s higher-level invitational Olympiad competitions.
