Competition Overview

British Biology Olympiad
The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) challenges students with an interest in biology to extend their understanding and demonstrate their skills. The competition consists of two 45-minute multiple-choice papers completed online under on-site supervision at the registered school or college. For PINNACLE participants in New Zealand, the two papers are completed in one supervised, in-person sitting in Auckland.- BBO encourages students to extend their biological understanding, apply core principles to unfamiliar material and develop scientific problem-solving skills. The competition is intended to support enrichment of biology in schools and colleges.
- PINNACLE's New Zealand entry is for Years 11-13 students with a strong interest in biology who enjoy challenging questions and applying biological principles beyond routine classroom contexts.
- All participating students receive an e-certificate through their school and are eligible for BioNet membership of the Royal Society of Biology.
- BBO is the first stage of the UK selection pathway for the International Biology Olympiad. Further UK training and assessment invitations are for top-scoring students at schools in the UK; students participating through PINNACLE in New Zealand take BBO as a standalone competition.
