Asia Mathematics Olympics
The Asia Mathematics Olympics (AMO) is an international mathematics competition organised by the Mathematics Olympics Committee Japan (MOCJ) and co-organised by Asia Maths Alliance (AMA). Pinnacle Examination Centre (PEC) is the exclusive New Zealand Country Partner responsible for local promotion, examination delivery and participant support.
AMO assesses mathematical skills relevant to the 21st century while encouraging students to develop logical reasoning, innovative thinking and confidence in solving challenging problems. The 2026 New Zealand Preliminary Round is open to students in NZ Years 2–9.
AMO gives students the opportunity to test their mathematical ability in an international setting, strengthen logical and innovative thinking, and gain experience solving unfamiliar problems under competition conditions.
Participants can benchmark their skills against students from across the region, receive an official AMO award certificate, and may qualify for the Invitational Finals in Tokyo.
AMO is suitable for students in NZ Years 2–9 who enjoy mathematics and want to challenge their reasoning and problem-solving skills. It is designed for students seeking meaningful international competition experience across age-appropriate divisions.
Students should practise age-appropriate mathematical reasoning, multiple-choice questions and fill-in-the-blank problems under timed conditions. Past AMO competition questions can be used to become familiar with the style and level of the competition.
The 2026 AMO New Zealand Preliminary Round will be delivered as a remote online exam on Sunday, 20 September 2026. Each division contains 15 questions: 10 multiple-choice questions and 5 fill-in-the-blank questions, for a total score of 100. Competition time is 75 or 90 minutes depending on the division.
Contestants receive an AMO 2026 certificate according to their result. First Prize is awarded to the top 10% of participants, Second Prize to the next 20%, Third Prize to the next 30%, and Merit Award to the remaining 40%. Merit Award recipients do not receive medals.
Top-performing students in the 2026 Preliminary Round may be invited to the AMO Invitational Finals at the National Olympic Youth Park in Yoyogi, Tokyo, Japan, on 6 December 2026. The exact qualification percentage is subject to confirmation by the organiser.
